Mathematical Model and Pressure Control in Air Bearing Slumping of Glass

Presentation duration: 20 minutes

Presenter: Mark Schattenburg

We report progress in new technology for thermally shaping individual sheets of glass using porous mandrels as air bearings. A detailed mathematical model of the process has been developed, allowing prediction of final surface quality based on process parameters including air pressure, imperfections on the mandrel surface, glass thickness variations and orientation of the gravity vector during the process. Improvements over earlier surface quality results are reported through achieving feedback control of process pressure and minimizing the pressure difference between opposing mandrels.
