All Day Round Table Discussion: “Whither X-ray Optics”

Many of us have been working on IXO, XEUS and Con-X for up to 15 years now and were disappointed in August to learn that IXO had been put into another full decade of technology development, with no significant hope of flying before 2030. The science for IXO was highly rated, so it was the cost and risk associated with the hardware that led to the low rating. We need to look at what we, as x-ray optical designers, have been doing wrong and chart a path that will avoid this trap in the future. The Round Table will start with a short summary of the relevant results from the US Decadal review and an analysis. Cash and a few other experienced individuals will toss suggestions for improvement onto the table. We will then open the discussion to further ideas and to see if we can reach consensus on where the problems lie and how to address them. If a consensus is actually forthcoming, it should be written down and distributed appropriately as a statement from the x-ray optics community.

Session chair: Webster Cash
