Improvement of spatial resolution with adjustable X-ray Optics

Presentation duration: 15 minutes

Presenter: Dan Schwartz

We are conceiving a mission intermediate in capability between IXO and Generation-X. This observatory would have an effective area comparable to IXO, and angular resolution comparable to Chandra; i.e., of order 1/2 arcsec. Such a telescope would start with slumped glass elements, and deposit piezoelectric actuators on the non-reflecting side. The in-plane actuators would apply strains to correct the low order figure errors. We expect that relaxing the Generation-X goal of 0.1 arcsec resolution will allow the required adjustments to be calibrated on the ground, and then simply applied on-orbit, without the elaborate instrumentation which Gen-X would require to measure the figure errors on-orbit. In this talk we present a theoretical correction capability limit based on influence functions which have been derived via finite element analysis.
